lauren hutton :: an inspiration

These photographs were published in the current edition of O Magazine that I happened to be leafing through recently.

Hutton was born November 17, 1943 (that makes her 65 by the way!), in Charleston, South Carolina. She graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in 1964 from Tulane University. She parlayed her looks into one of the major modeling careers of the 1970s and 80s, including the first huge contract by a model with a cosmetics company.

Lauren Hutton made authenticity, audacity, and ease her fashion watchwords—and forged a new freedom for women. She's still at it.

I can only hope to look this good when I'm her age!

Hutton has a history with menswear, ranging from down-and-dirty denim to Giorgio Armani's slouchy '70s pantsuits. Balanced proportions—here, the juxtaposition of a perfectly fitted jacket and easy bottoms—are crucial to pulling off anything oversize.

Changing for evening used to be a big production: The whole point was to transform yourself. But Hutton never favored frilly ball gowns that didn't feel like her. She pioneered the modern concept of glamorous elements treated in a more offhand way.

The fusion of menswear and metallic is very much her thing, and great for day or night. Another surprise: the cotton cashmere V-neck sweater swooshing out into a feminine flounce.
