friday humor

songs without borders

It was only a matter of time before a film was made about composer Morten Lauridsen. His music, beloved by millions, is the most performed contemporary choral music in the world. And for good reason! It's accessible, well crafted, and quite frankly some of the most beautiful music for the human voice that has been penned to paper.

Sundance shorts stream on Yahoo for online Audience Award voting

From the LA Times:
In the past, any independent film fan who couldn’t make it to Park City, Utah, in the last two weeks of January had to wait until distribution deals went through to see Sundance Film Festival hits such as “Little Miss Sunshine” and “Napoleon Dynamite.” That’s starting to change. Recently, Sundance started bringing its programming into select cities during the festival, and starting this year, nine of the short films in the festival will be available to watch online.
Starting yesterday, the short films premiering at Sundance are viewable at sundance.yahoo.com via Yahoo, a sponsor of the festival. Through Jan. 27, Web users can watch the films and vote on them for the Yahoo! Audience Award. The winning filmmaker will be announced  Jan. 28 and will receive $5,000.
“Some of the best filmmakers started their careers developing short films and now our audience has the chance to pick what could be the next big name in the film industry,” Mickie Rosen, senior vice president of Yahoo Media Network, said in a statement.
The nine films were selected by festival organizers and Yahoo movie editors. See the full list along with synopses below:
“ '92 Skybox Alonzo Mourning Rookie Card”
Jim and Dave, two brothers who don't like each other very much, are forced to come together when their dad dies. Dave is pretty sure he has an Alonzo Mourning Skybox Series rookie card, but Jim has other ideas.
“Aquadettes”
A meditation on life, death and synchronized swimming.
“The Arm”
To keep up with social pressure in a technologically advanced world, Chance starts a texting relationship with Genevieve, a girl he meets at a yogurt shop. But tragedy forces Chance to realize that he was never in a relationship at all.
“Debutante Hunters”
In the low country of South Carolina, some true Southern belles reveal their more rugged side, providing a glimpse into what drives them to hunt in the wild.
“Dol (First Birthday)”
A gay Korean American man yearns for a family life that is just out of reach.
“Henley”
Meet 9-year-old Ted Henley, budding motel manager and roadkill entrepreneur.
“Long Distance Information”
Father always told us, “Never talk to strangers.”  But surely we have to phone home sometimes.
“Odysseus’ Gambit”
During his lifetime, each man plays cosmic chess against the devil.
“Una Hora por Favora”
A woman hires a day laborer for an hour and gets more than she bargained for.

The Sundance Film Festival 2012 kicked off Thursday and continues through  Jan. 29.

protect a free internet

PROTECT IP / SOPA Breaks The Internet from Fight for the Future on Vimeo.

From the NY Times:

Under the proposed legislation, if a copyright holder like Warner Brothers discovers that a foreign site is focused on offering illegal copies of songs or movies, it could seek a court order that would require search engines like Google to remove links to the site and require advertising companies to cut off payments to it.

Internet companies fear that because the definitions of terms like “search engine” are so broad in the legislation, Web sites big and small could be responsible for monitoring all material on their pages for potential violations — an expensive and complex challenge.

They say they support current law, which requires Web sites with copyright-infringing content to take it down if copyright holders ask them to, leaving the rest of the site intact. Google, which owns YouTube and other sites, received five million requests to remove content or links last year, and it says it acts in less than six hours if it determines that the request is legitimate.

From Craigslist:

about > SOPA

Corporate supporters of Senate 968 (PIPA) and HR 3261 (SOPA) demand the ability to take down any web site (including craigslist, Wikipedia, or Google) that hurts their profits -- without prior judicial oversight or due process  -- in the name of combating "online piracy."

Try to imagine jack-booted thugs throttling free speech, poisoning the Internet (greatest of American inventions, the very pillar of modern democracy), and devastating one of the our most successful industries. Totalitarian, anti-American, massively-job-killing nonsense.

From Wikipedia:
Lateef Mtima, director of the Institute for Intellectual Property and Social Justice at Howard University School of Law, expressed concern that users who upload copyrighted content to sites could potentially be held criminally liable themselves, saying, "Perhaps the most dangerous aspect of the bill is that the conduct it would criminalize is so poorly defined. While on its face the bill seems to attempt to distinguish between commercial and non-commercial conduct, purportedly criminalizing the former and permitting the latter, in actuality the bill not only fails to accomplish this but, because of its lack of concrete definitions, it potentially criminalizes conduct that is currently permitted under the law."[55]

Life with a kitten.

new member of the family

Last weekend we adopted a 4-month old kitten we've named Lupo because he looks, and acts, a little wolf-ish.

We were a little worried how our 2-year old, Grigio, would get along with him. We shouldn't have been because they've become best buddies.

tangerine tango

2012 Pantone Color of the Year

The 2011 color of the year, PANTONE 18-2120 Honeysuckle, encouraged us to face everyday troubles with verve and vigor. Tangerine Tango, a spirited reddish orange, continues to provide the energy boost we need to recharge and move forward.

“Sophisticated but at the same time dramatic and seductive, Tangerine Tango is an orange with a lot of depth to it,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. “Reminiscent of the radiant shadings of a sunset, Tangerine Tango marries the vivaciousness and adrenaline rush of red with the friendliness and warmth of yellow, to form a high-visibility, magnetic hue that emanates heat and energy.”

Over the past several years, orange has grown in popularity and acceptance among designers and consumers alike. A provocative attention-getter, Tangerine Tango is especially appealing in men’s and women’s fashion. Fashion designers featured in the PANTONE Fashion Color Report Spring 2012, including Tommy Hilfiger, Nanette Lepore, Cynthia Steffe by Shaun Kearney, Elie Tahari and Adrienne Vittadini, are incorporating this attractive orange into their spring collections. A fun, lively take on a traditional autumnal hue, Tangerine Tango will surely carry through to fall fashion as well.

A winner in cosmetics because of its versatility, Tangerine Tango is a bit exotic, but in a very friendly, non-threatening way. Add a sultry flair to lips, cheeks and nails with Tangerine Tango. An unexpected eye shadow color, Tangerine Tango is a complementary opposite that flatters blue or green eyes. When paired with brown eyes, it brings out an amber cast.

Energize interior spaces with Tangerine Tango patterned home accessories. Pillows, bedspreads and tabletop accessories in this high-impact hue add spice to any room. Or incorporate Tangerine Tango appliances and personal electronics for an unexpected pop of color. Looking for an inexpensive way to perk up your home? Paint a wall in Tangerine Tango for a dynamic burst of energy in the kitchen, entryway or hallway.

Read an interview in today's NY Times with Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, author and the owner of a color consulting company, who has headed the committee that chooses Pantone’s color of the year, in an effort, she says, to distill the prevailing mood into a single hue.
