clothes to make mother nature happy

NEW YORK, Feb 10, 2010 (AFP) - Newspaper ballgowns, recycled plastic sandals and coats made of wool from "happy and free" sheep -- designers are showing clothes to make Mother Nature smile at GreenShows Eco Fashion Week.

After a first run last September, the event's second fashion week kicks off on Sunday 14 February, with 10 designers sending models down runways at an East Village building in New York City.

Even the location is environmentally friendly, complete with LEED-Gold certification -- a high standard of environmentally sustainable construction.

Models will strut their stuff for four days for GreenShows, timed to coincide with stylistas and tastemakers from around the fashion world flocking to New York City to view Autumn-Winter 2010 collections on display at Bryant Park.

condom creations grace the catwalk

ADDIS ABABA, 9 February 2010 (IRIN) - The whimsy of fashion collided with some of life's harsher realities when, during a recent fashion show in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, condoms were the fabric of choice on the catwalk.

At the Condom Clothes Fashion Show - held in January and organized by social marketing group DKT with the Zalef Fine Art and Fashion Design Institute - 10 spectacular dresses made exclusively from 10,000 male and female condoms of all colours, shapes and sizes were on show.

"In Ethiopia, condoms have a bad image; people are afraid when they want to buy condoms at the supermarket - they even try to hide the condoms quickly after they have bought them," Emebet Alemu, designer of the dresses and organizer of the shows, told IRIN/PlusNews. "We wanted to change that by using an art event; [maybe] the show will open people's minds a little ... maybe it will make them [condoms] seem more normal for people."

The latex garments were later modelled at four shows - all held under the theme, "Abstain, Be faithful and use Condoms" - at the Hilton Hotel in Ethiopia's capital; there is also a plan for the event to be taken to Adama, a major regional city.

The fashion initiative is the latest move by DKT to try to break the stigma associated with condom use in Ethiopia; in 2009, it set up a condom café in Addis, and ran a two-month campaign to distribute condoms and kerosene to house helps in the capital.

Condom stigma

Despite such campaigns, however, condoms remain highly stigmatized in Ethiopia; a 2008 study in Adwa town, about 1,000km north of Addis Ababa, found that 46 percent believed that people who used condoms were promiscuous.

"Instead of teaching one-to-one relationships, they promote condoms," Gelila Ejigu, 24, said of the condom fashion shows. "When people see it they will think they should have the type of relationships where they must use a condom."

However, Emebet Abu, DKT Ethiopia's head of communications, explained that the condom fashion campaign was tailored to the youth, with a view to highlighting condoms as an additional option and not a replacement for abstinence or fidelity as methods of HIV prevention.

"The idea of the show was to target young people, who like fashion and design," he said. "We also teach abstinence and to be faithful, but some young people will not abstain or be faithful; they may have more than one partner already so they must use condoms."

jack murtha :: good night

WASHINGTON — Representative John P. Murtha of Pennsylvania, a gruff ex-Marine who used his immense power in military spending to funnel hundreds of millions of dollars to his hard-luck district and who became an outspoken critic of the Iraq war, died on Monday. He was 77.

“The war in Iraq is not going as advertised,” Mr. Murtha said in November 2005 as he demanded an immediate withdrawal of American troops. He called the Iraq campaign “a flawed policy wrapped in illusion.”

wow factor

I've seen some vintage trailer renovations but nothing - I mean nothing - compares to this one.

Jane Hallworth’s 1955 Spartan Aircraft Imperial Mansion All-Aluminum Trailercoach dares to defy the stereotype. Completely reconstructed and re-imagined, the caravan sports an array of elegant, unexpected details and finishes, including an interior skin of sumptuous reclaimed rosewood, sleek modern hardware and a full Miele kitchen. Hallworth, an interior designer with a loyal following among the pillars of the young Hollywood set, first realized the potential for an upscale mobile dwelling after remodeling a trailer for Drew Barrymore a decade ago. Then in 2005, she purchased an old Spartan coach on eBay and, after an intensive rehabilitation process, christened it the Bobby Dazzler as a tribute to her late father, Robert. (It’s also a play on the expression in northern England for a jaunty, fancifully dressed person.)

When it’s not being rented, Hallworth’s 1955 Spartan aluminum trailer lives in a warehouse in Fillmore.

Among the cultivated furnishings are a pair of rosewood tables from Blackman Cruz and an English Art Deco bar cabinet.

Amenities include a full Miele kitchen and signature Blackman Cruz bronze-and-walnut stools.

Floors and wall panels of reclaimed rosewood create a warm counterpoint to the trailer’s metal exterior. Missoni blanket from Pat McGann.

The bathroom features steel tiles from Ann Sacks and, left, hardware by Antonio Citterio for Hansgrohe.

hitting a nerve

The new blog Unhappy Hipsters seems to have hit a nerve. Fellow bloggers are passing it around like fire. And the NY Times and the LA Times have both commented.

Is this a much-deserved spanking for Dwell?

The debate — whether the ubiquity of suburban neo-modern developments was really an upgrade from new-money McMansions — ended in a standoff, mired by the generation gap.

At the art opening, he’d been convinced the blank canvas symbolized endless possibilities. Back at home, it was just one more reminder of his own desperation.

Exposure to luxury can alter decision making

The mere exposure to luxury goods can have a corrosive effect on decision-making that pushes individuals to put their interests over the interests of others, according to a Harvard Business School study.

They concluded that luxury seems intrinsically linked to self-interest.

Seriously. Did they really need to have a study to figure that out? Read more here.

raising the roof

A computer rendering of the new black box theater that will be perched atop the Vivian Beaumont.

Nearly half a century after Eero Saarinen and Jo Meizner designed the Vivian Beaumont Theater at Lincoln Center, Meizner's assisitant Hugh Hardy, 77, now a high-profile architect himself, is again working on the Beaumont, only this time without the involvement of Saarinen the Modernist master. His design for an addition to the building — a new black box theater that will be perched on the roof of the Beaumont Theater with a terrace overlooking Lincoln Center — is to be unveiled today.

Last year preservationists warned against messing with Saarinen’s original building, and with the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, designed by Gordon Bunshaft, that abuts it.

But the project has made it through the public approval process, including a nod from the Landmarks Preservation Commission (which has only an advisory role, since Lincoln Center is not landmarked).

A computerized view from the plaza. Preservationists fear messing with Saarinen's building.

new addition to the family

We adopted Grigio a week and a half ago. He's now ten weeks old. He came with an upper respiratory infection that he picked up in the shelter he came from. It was touch and go for a while. But now he's on the mend and doing all things kittens like to do: sleep, eat, play, sleep, eat, play . . . .

too thin

American teen girls feel pressure to be thin

NEW YORK (Reuters Life!) - Almost nine in 10 American teenage girls say they feel pressured by the fashion and media industries to be skinny and that an unrealistic, unattainable image of beauty has been created, a poll showed on Monday 1 February.

The online survey of 1,000 girls aged between 13 and 17 for the Girl Scouts of the USA found that three quarters said they would be more likely to buy clothes that they see on real-size models than on women who are skinny.
But three out of four girls said that fashion is "really important" to them.

"The fashion industry remains a powerful influence on girls and the way they view themselves and their bodies," said Kimberlee Salmond, senior researchers at the Girl Scout Research Institute.

"Teenage girls take cues about how they should look from models they see in fashion magazines and on TV and it is something that they struggle to reconcile with when they look at themselves in the mirror," she said.

More than 80 percent of teen girls said they would rather see natural photos of models rather than pictures that had been digitally altered or enhanced.

Other top influences on body perceptions, aside from celebrities and models, are peers, friends and parents, the poll showed.

One in three girls said they have starved themselves or refused to eat in an effort to lose weight, while almost half said they knew someone their age who has forced themselves to throw up after eating. More than a third said they know someone who has been diagnosed with an eating disorder.

The survey was conducted by youth research firm Tru.

we're going retro

Mudpie : Open Road - Male & Female - spring/summer 2010

“‘Retro’ defines the care free attitude of the neo-hippy on the classic American road trip. Nostalgic journeys take in kitsch beach scenes and compelling coastlines. Design is inspired by vintage postcards, poolside images, Hawaiian beaches and Californian motels. Style evokes simplicity, forgotten freedom and long, almost endless summers.”

Fashion Interpretation:

A palette inspired by the sea, intense aqua and hypnotic blues contrast with joyful shades of coral and sunny yellow. Fabrics use natural fibres while finishes with a metallic shimmering conjure images of a rippling ocean. Fabrics are softened with distressing which contrasts with stud detailing. Denim is key, combined with fun motifs for a 50s flavour or checks, stripes and polka dots. Sweet detailing for girls feature quirky touches updating tailored silhouettes. For boys, super cool styles use denim, leather and printed cotton shirts with rolled sleeves to convey a laidback holiday look. Neckerchiefs, brimmed hats and retro footwear such as canvas plimsolls reflect the holiday vibe.
